Our Sordid History

We are a neighborhood bar and grill with incredibly tasty food from fried bar snacks to a healthy Cobb salad. Selections include smashburgers, gourmet dogs, grilled chicken sandwiches, chili fries, cheese curds, and fried pickles to name a few.
Shovel’s is located on the bottom floor of The St. Paul Apartments built in 2011. The bottom floor was originally David E. Bucks liquor store. In 2019 the liquor store went out of business for obvious reasons and become a cigar shop which was a well know front for a Speakeasy. The full-sized basement kept folks lubricated until the 1930’s. There is still a glass peephole in the door that leads downstairs. In the 1930’s this location became The Lodge, at which time the current wooden bar was installed by United Showcase Fixture Co., a San Francisco establishment that went out of business in the late 1930’s . In the 1960’s Harry Harrington purchased and put his name on the bar. In 2020 the bar became Shovels, a tribute to the gold-rush era that helped to build San Francisco into what it is. Many old time patrons feel that Harry Harrington’s presence is still in the bar. As new knowledge of history is discovered , it may actually be David E Bucks presence that is felt as no one knows what happened to him.
